After a long renovation period, Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art has finally reopened its doors back in October. I have to admit that I’ve only been there once before the renovation so I can’t really speak about what has changed, but I’d like to show you what the museum looks like now.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰:

⚪️ A vast collection showcased at MIA represents Islamic art from three continents dating from the 7th to the 19th century.

⚪️ MIA currently features 18 galleries organized according to broad historical and cultural themes, periods and geography (galleries 17 & 18 were still closed when I went).

⚪️ It’s advised that you begin your visit on the ground floor and then work your way up.

⚪️ The refurbished museum features new interactive terminals which are a perfect way to keep the children engaged during your visit.

⚪️ There’s currently a temporary exhibition in MIA, called “Baghdad: Eye’s Delight”. Located on the ground floor, it celebrates the capital of Iraq as one of the most important and influential cities in the Islamic world. You can access it with your main ticket.

⚪️ There’s a gift shop available on the ground floor as well as a café, while the top floor houses the famous Idam restaurant.

⚪️ Don’t forget to pay a visit to a refurbished MIA Library, which is located in the Education Wing of the Museum (at the museum entrance turn right, and go straight ahead).

Due to World Cup related road closures, the Museum can’t be accessed with a car at the moment. The best way to reach it is to take the Metro to one of the stations close to Corniche and then use a shuttle bus to reach the site. Or take a Qatar Museums shuttle from NMOQ.

After spending a decade in Qatar, this year we finally opted for an ever-so-popular Festive season dish: Roast Turkey to Go (disclaimer: in Poland our Christmas staple is fish so we know nothing about the turkey tradition 😀).

Our first ever turkey was courtesy of City Centre Rotana and it was a feast! (It still IS a feast, in fact, because there was no way on Earth that 4 adults and 3 kids would be able to finish it in one go 😂).

The bird came piping hot and sharp on time (I kid you not- we requested delivery “around 6pm” and the driver rang my bell at 6:00 😱 which is even more impressive considering that we live next to Lusail stadium and so our deliveries are notoriously late), together with a second huge box full of sides, cranberry sauce and pan juices made into a delicious gravy. Oh, and there was an apple pie too!

Now I’m not an expert on turkey but it was so good! Juicy and tender, and instant hit with everyone who tried it. I mean seriously, so many years wasted not ordering it 😂

The sides were right up my alley too, creamed spinach being my absolute favorite. Braised red cabbage took me on a trip down the memory lane (I ate it a lot as a kid, although not for Christmas!).

This massive bird costs QAR 699 (website says it weighs around 10kg and I believe them 😂). Price includes: turkey, 4 sides (there are many to choose from), cranberry sauce, pan juices, and an apple pie. This would feed 6-8 adults easily, depending on how hungry they are 😅

Now this is a very interesting concept that nobody talks about (I blame it on the World Cup fever). Some of you might know that MIA Park is currently housing colorful sculptural installations of Yayoi Kusama, a celebrated contemporary artist, called “My Soul Blooms Forever”. But hardly anyone knows that there’s actually a second part of this exhibition: an infinity mirrored room inside Al Riwaq gallery!

The room is a small space covered in mirrors, with flashing LED lights hanging from the ceiling. It’s similar to the installation of Pipilotti Rist, but not quite the same! The main difference is that you don’t get to walk around. Once you walk into the room, you are asked to stand in the middle, where you can immerse yourself in the experience. The mirrors give you an impression of infinity space, which is amazing and a bit confusing at times! There’s no music – you stand and contemplate in complete silence, with lights going from white to red and then switching off, enclosing you in complete darkness for a brief moment.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰:

🔵 Infinity room has to be booked in advance, via QM website (it’s possible to walk in if there is nobody waiting).

🔵 It’s FREE for Qatar/GCC citizens & residents, children, as well as Hayya card holders and One Pass holders.

🔵 Your time slot inside the room is 1 MINUTE ONLY! (even though the booking is for 15 min). If there’s nobody else waiting, they can extend it for you.

🔵 Entry to this room is NOT at the main entrance of Al Riwaq. There’s a small side door from the parking side.

⏰ Timings:

First booking slot is at 10am, last slot – 9:15pm.

Overall, it’s a very interesting experience. Because of how short it is, I wouldn’t recommend that you go all the way there just for this, but it can be paired with visiting the rest of Y. Kusama’s exhibition, as well as MIA and the Lusail Museum: Tales of a Connected World exhibition which is also held at Al Riwaq.

Last week I got an amazing opportunity to experience the Portugal – Switzerland game at the Lusail Stadium, using a hospitality package. I’ve always seen the “hospitality” parkings and entrances while at the stadiums but was never aware of what this actually entails, and how cool the experience is.

Here’s what you need to know:

⚽️ The VIP lounges throughout the World Cup are managed by MATCH Hospitality and provide the viewers with an unparallel experience, both in terms of hospitality and seeing the actual game.

⚽️ There are several different hospitality package options available, which are priced differently (prices also depend on the game – the further into the tournament, the more expensive it gets). Even though the prices are high (thousands of dollars on average!), lounge was full to the brim!

⚽️ Overall, each hospitality stadium package (there are also offsite options!) will grant you a minimum of Cat. 1 match ticket, priority access to the venue (and special dedicated parking), some kind of hospitality space serving food & beverage (of course included in the price), and a commemorative gift.

⚽️ Our package allowed us to access to a stadium lounge, which is what you can see in the reel. Fun fact: the lounge is completely soundproof, you wouldn’t know that you’re actually inside a football stadium!

The Children’s Art Exhibition, Reesha: We Welcom

The Children’s Art Exhibition, Reesha: We Welcome the World to Qatar 2022™

As far as the World Cup exhibitions go, this one is pretty special! Located in the main hall of Qatar National Library, it features 32 canvases painted by students, under the supervision of a Qatari artist.

The paintings (which are sooo well executed, I loved them all!) revolve around World Cup, and especially its stadiums. Each stadium has its own dedicated space, including not only the paintings, but also a brief description and some interesting facts about it!

What’s worth mentioning is that the exhibition is inclusive & accessible to all: audio-descriptive bilingual guides, descriptions of the paintings in Braille, and high-contrast tactile images are provided for guests with impaired vision.

Useful information:

🎨 This exhibition is FREE for everyone to visit.

🎨 It’s displayed in QNL until 31st of Dec 2022.

🎨 Open within the Library’s opening hours.

🎨 The Library can be reached by car (unless there’s a game at the EC Stadium!), metro (QNL station, Green Line), or the free EC Tram (Multaqa station).

This week we have finally visited QNL’s sensory room. It’s such a hidden gem and I wish we had known about it earlier – Danny was so happy to explore! The room provides support for the little ones with additional needs to develop and engage their senses. It’s a great help for children with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or sensory impairments to learn to interact with the world around them in a safe environment.

Using this room is 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 of charge.

You can park at the QNL parking lot, or use the Oxygen Park parking or Al Shaqab parking and take the Education City free tram (please note that during the World Cup game days on EC Stadium, roads/parkings inside EC are closed). If you prefer the Metro, take the Green Line to Qatar National Library station.

𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:

🧸 The room is located on the ground floor, close to the Children’s Library.

🧸 Once you arrive for your time slot, head to the Information Desk and a staff member will assist you to access the room and turn on all devices inside.

🧸 Don’t be late – if the slot after yours is booked, you will not be able to stay any longer than your designated time.

🧸 Apart from an abundance of “regular” toys, there’s a range of specific sensory devices available inside the room (the Bubble Column, a projector, an interactive Infinity Panel).

On the 25th of November, Education City launched their very own Fan Zone, located inside Oxygen Park. I went there to check it out and was quite impressed with what I saw!

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬:

⚽️ This Fan Zone is FREE of charge, Hayya card is NOT required to enter.

⚽️ It’s located in the part of the Park that’s closer to the tram station (you won’t miss it, there’s signage!).

⚽️ It’s family friendly, with some football-related activities for the kids and plenty of green space for them to run around.

⚽️ The screens are HUGE and provide an excellent viewing experience.

⚽️ It features comfortable seating area: sun beds in front of the screens, as well as elevated seats in the back.

⚽️ Washrooms & prayer rooms are available.

⚽️ There is a stand selling snacks (popcorn, nachos, chips etc.) and drinks, as well as mobile cafés selling quality coffee.

Doha Metro is a great alternative to going around in circles in a car 🙈 if you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m a big fan of local metro. It’s fast, comfortable and family friendly!

It’s also a great souvenir from the World Cup!

Hayya Service Centre is located in DECC (Westbay) and easily accessible with the metro (DECC Station on the Red Line).

The Center is opened daily from 10am to 10pm, on Fridays from 2pm.

A tribute to MJ at the FIFA Fan Festival 😍

Al Masrah Park (also known as the Umbrella Park) i

Al Masrah Park (also known as the Umbrella Park) is not new, but mostly flies under the radar. It’s small but very strategically located, squeezed between Qatar Post and Qatar National Theatre (“Masrah” actually means “theatre”). The park was recently made a lot more interesting thanks to some exciting new additions!

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰:

🌳 Al Masrah park is home to the recently unveiled public art: “Dugong” by Jeff Koons and “Doha Modern Playground” by Shezad Dawood & Fatma Al Sehlawi (which is an actual playground, inspired by some of Qatar’s most recognizable structures).

🌳 You can also find the extremely instagrammable floral/umbrella tunnels here, probably my favorite part of this park!

🌳 There’s of course a grassy area to enjoy, as well as outdoor gyms and a running path.

🌳 Right next to the park you’ll find an underpass to the Corniche.

🌳 There are bathrooms available in the far corner of the park from Theatre side, as well as at the Metro station (Metro ones might not be accessible during the World Cup).

𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞:

🚦The most convenient way is via Metro (Red Line) – Corniche station is located at the entrance to the park. Visiting singing sand dunes, one of Qatar’s hidden gems, feels like going to the beach, without the actual beach 😂

The main attraction of this place is climbing up a dune of super soft sand and then sliding down. A very cool experience for both adults and kids!

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰:

🏜 There are a couple of different dunes in the area, we choose one that’s quite close to the road. It comes up when you put “Singing Sand Dunes” in google maps. We usually drive to the outer edge of it.

🏜 The area around dunes itself is rocky, best to take an SUV for a bit of off-road driving required (you could reach with sedan, but it’s risky with low ground clearance).

🏜 The “singing” is actually a sound made by sand when you slide down the dune. Like hubby said: “the fatter you are, the louder it sings” 😂🙈

🏜 There’s a petrol station approx. 10min drive away, no other options to buy food and drinks around. That’s also the nearest toilet 🙈

🏜 Take torches if you’re planning to stay after dark - it’s pitch black there at night!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:

💛 Climbing the dunes and sliding down is so much fun!!! I could do this all day 😂

💛 AMAZING sunset views from the top of the dune.

💛 Soft sand is perfect for the little ones to dig around.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞:

❌ The garbage! Some people think it’s ok to dump their trash on top of the dunes 😡🤦‍♀️ you see bags of it just lying there.

❌ There’s an occasional land cruiser going dune bashing (much less than in Sealine though!), so have a good look around once on top, to make sure there aren’t any nearby.

❌ No facilities around.

Overall it’s a good spot for a family outing, for a different kind of entertainment than another beach or a mall 😀
